How To Pack a Suit When Traveling for a Job Interview

Use a Garment Bag

Garment bags are great for protecting suits and keeping them wrinkle-free. If you’re driving to the interview, law it flat across the back seat. If your flying, gently fold the bag in half to meet size requirements and then ask the flight attendant to hang the bag for you, or place it in the overhead compartment. Before you fly, make sure to check the airline’s size requirements for hanging garment bags. In addition, it’s much safer to take your suit with you in your carry on as opposed to putting it in your checked luggage, as checked baggage can get lost or misplaced by the airline, and it may not be returned to you in time.

Packing in a Suitcase

If you need to pack your suit in a suitcase, there are several folding techniques you can use to keep it from wrinkling. Turn the jacket inside out and fold it in half. Don’t fold the pants, rather, lay them flat and roll them up from the cuffs. Fold the dress shirt with creases along the sides, in the same way these shirts are folded in the store. Roll up the tie and you’re ready to go.

When You Arrive

In the hotel, unpack your suit and hang it up. Hanging will eliminate creases and wrinkles after several hours. For more severe wrinkles, try hanging it in the bathroom and turning on the hot water in the shower to use the steam to de-wrinkle the garment. As a last resort, check with the concierge to see if the hotel offers dry cleaning services.
